The Family Returns
Oswald, one of Aethelfrith's sons, and his supporters returned to his father's old kingdom and defeated the foes in battle near Hexham (633AD). Once Oswald was established he invited the monks on Iona to send a mission to Northumbria. They made their centre on Lindisfarne near Bamburgh, still a stronghold. Relative peace now existed throughout Northumbria and Christianity returned to the area.
