The Whitby +Abbae+ stone illustration

This piece is the boss from a broken cross head which was found c1920 in the level of the remains of the Anglo-Saxon monastery (657-867) at Whitby Abbey. This stone is in the collection of the Yorkshire Museum at York. It is inscribed in the same letter style as was used in writing the Lindisfarne Gospels. While it cannot be certain that the reference on this memorial stone is to Abbae of urbs Coludi, it is known that Ebba's brother Oswy was buried here as was her uncle the King Edwin. Further it is known that Edwin's shrine here was surrounded by a good number of royal ladies of his line.
