The Coldingham (Kirk Hill) stone illustration

This is a fragment of the shaft of a tall free standing cross which has been dated to about the late 9th C. In the mid 19th C the fragment was taken from near the Kirk Hill to Coldingham Priory Church, and later it was passed on to the National Collection. The cross may have been put at the Kirk Hill if an active church existed there at the time, or it could have been put up as a memorial to Ebba. Other possibilities for its erection are likely.

Further details of this stone are in an article the Coldingham Stone.
