It was usual for the Prior to do so accompanied by a retinue. Not only could the Prior collect dues to the Priory, he could also receive as an agent monies raised by the monarch. In addition the Prior of Coldingham administered justice in the shire.

The map below gives the route of an imagined tour. In following the route today connections with medieval times are made. Travelling this route by car at a leisurely rate could take 4 hours.

While the descriptions on this tour refer to more than old churches, there follow five photographs related to the remains of churches as they are the most photographable.
