A Gaming piece

This was found in the churchyard of the Priory in 1892 and presented to the predecessor of the Museum of Scotland in 1894 by Campbell Noble R.S.A. Catalogue no. NS 30.

Its height is 4.5cm and is now described as an 'ivory chessman'.

The pattern of the decoration suggests an approximate dating to 12th C.

A small archaeological investigation at the north end of the field adjacent to the Church produced a number of finds including a piece of worked bone with dot decorations showing similarities to that on the 'ivory chessman'. (2000)
