'Celebrating St Cuthbert's Day at Coldingham Priory' by Eric Ritchie. [St Cuthbert's Day is the 20th March and important day for an important saint - the spring equinox. There would have been many services to Cuthbert on this date in the Middle Ages.] Nearest are the ordinary people.They are kept separate from the monks performing the rites in the sanctuary. Behind the monks are figures painted on the wall. Words from the chanting of a nearby choir of monks are heard. |
