1200AD

About 1200AD various monks at Coldingham had written a book, the "Life of Ebba", with stories and legends about the local saint, Ebba, who had been head of a short lived double monastery on the Brugh at St Abb's Head in the 7th century.

The seal of Prior Simon showing a monk with a book, about 1200AD.

Prior Simon - There is some difficulty as Simon is said to be the first recorded Prior (1141AD) and his grandson, also Simon, appears in later documents as a Prior. The seal is at present (2000AD) on display in the Treasury at Durham Cathedral. The Cathedral date the Prior on the seal to 1189-1203AD.

In the "Life of Ebba" the monks also wrote about themselves: one of their tasks was to encourage pilgrims to visit the old site connected with Ebba.
