1100AD

In 1100 Edgar King of Scots, dedicated the Church at Coldingham to St Mary (the figure below with child) and gave the Church to the monks of St Cuthbert (figure on right with crozier), that is to say he gave the Church to the monks of Durham.

This was the seal of Prior William Drax (part figure below) c1420.

The foundations of Edgar's Norman Church lie under the present Church. The size of Edgar's Church was about the size of today's Church, approx 33mx7m.

This sketch is based on the plan of these foundations and has been built up from what is known about other churches of this time.
